The highway that carries weekend buyers from Panama City to Coronado and the Pacific beaches just passed a construction milestone. The Corredor de las Playas widening reported 5 percent physical progress in late August and about 5.5 percent by mid-September, with bridge construction scheduled to begin in September 2026 and delivery set for September 2028 (Panamá América, TVN-2, and Carreteras Panamericanas).
What Happened
The project widens the Pan-American Highway from four to six lanes over roughly 16 kilometers between La Chorrera and the Sajalices river bridge, and adds the new Campana Variant with a viaduct. Awarded to Constructora MECO in January 2026 for $228.5 million, it had disbursed about $13 million by late August. In mid-September, Caja de Ahorros formalized its participation in more than $67 million of syndicated financing, and the ministry briefed residents of Torolandia and Perequeté on September 18.
Why It Matters for Property
This stretch is the main artery for the Pacific beach corridor: Coronado, Gorgona, San Carlos, and the resort communities beyond. The Campana climb is the corridor's traffic bottleneck, and the widening plus the new variant is designed to smooth that drive for second-home owners, relocators, and investors moving between the capital and the coast, including the developments around West Panama.
What It Could Mean
This is an approved, financed project under construction, not a proposal. Better access tends to broaden the pool of buyers for beach-area properties, and a more reliable weekend commute supports resale demand and short-term rental use. The gains arrive gradually as sections open, so treat this as a trend to track, not a reason to rush. Clean title, realistic pricing, and lifestyle fit still decide the deal.
We track these projects so clients do not have to. Start with the Pacific beach buyer's guide, check the market report, or talk with Chad. No pressure, just good information.
